Patient Info
Sigmoidoscopy is the examination of the rectum and sigmoid colon. Colonoscopy is the examination of the entire colon. In both examinations, a flexible scope is inserted into the lower GI tract for a direct look. Your doctor will be able to take specimens, remove polyps (a polypectomy) and diagnose inflammation such as colitis, causes of bleeding or tumors.

Upper Endoscopy
An EGD is the examination of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum). During the EGD a flexible endosocpe is passed through the mouth to the esophagus, stomach and duodenum for direct visualization. Your doctor can diagnose ulcers, gastritis, tumors and causes of pain or bleeding. It is also used for taking biopsy specimens, removing foreign objects, stopping bleeding and opening structures (narrow areas).
